Wim Crouwel needs not much introduction in the world of graphic design. Working on grids & typography, he gave us hundreds of fantastic examples for his works on the catalogues of Stedelijk Musem in Holland; a long collaboration for years.

The Dutch did it again, sharing with us the digitised work of the great master with a lot of rare works as well as high resolution images of the works.

“Typography has one plain duty before it and that is to convey information in writing.”

I accidentally explored some of the (maybe) lesser-known founders of the International Typographic Style, a style also knows as Swiss Style.
The Swiss Style was defined by the use of sans-serif typefaces, and employed a page grid for structure, producing asymmetrical layouts.
We are talking about projects and posters from the 50′s and 60′s that continue to influence both print and interactive design till nowadays. Α contemporary value style with works considered phresh to this day.

Google – surfing led me to a designer and typographer by the name of Emil Ruder (1914-1970), who played a key part in the development and dissemination of the Swiss Style.

These posters are over 50 years old, made with no photoshop or corel or whatever fancy software used nowadays.

the design process of the uk road signs

I just saw Margaret Calvert on Top Gear‘s latest episode (January 3rd, 2010) talking about the design process of the UK road signs and even though it’s quite a ‘geeky’ theme, there’s some design and typography behind that topic that makes it interesting to me. So after a tiny research here i am phreshing up with few words and pictures

In 1957, the United Kingdom’s Department of Transport appointed an Advisory Committee on Traffic Signs for Motorways. Jock Kinneir and his assistant Margaret Calvert were appointed as graphic designers to it.
The committee looked at examples from other European states as well as the USA but Kinneir and Calvert found them somewhat harsh and unsatisfactory.

Instead, they developed a more rounded typeface called “Transport” with distinctive tails to ‘a’, ‘t’, and ‘l’, and bar-less fractions, all of which helped legibility.
Until today, two forms of their typeface exist: Transport Medium and Transport Heavy. Both have the same basic form, but Transport Heavy is boldface, to allow easier readability for black letters on white backgrounds, such as those used on non-primary roads, while Transport Medium is lighter, and is used for white letters on dark backgrounds, such as the blue motorway signs or the green primary route signs.

Margaret Calvert was the one who came up with simple, easy-to-understand pictograms, most notably the signs for ‘men at work’ (a man digging), ‘farm animals’ (a cow), and ‘schoolchildren nearby’ (a girl leading a boy by the hand, whom she later revealed to be herself), based on pre-existing European road signs.

Marion Deuchars & Margaret Calvert have been working together and they recently produced a work of art in nine sections, celebrating the 50th Anniversary of the completion of the M1.
